In memory of Andrew Wood

Mother Love Bone was founded by Andrew Wood, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Bruce Fairweather, and Greg Gilmore in 1988. The band’s name is a moniker for penis (and from Mother Love Bone came Pearl Jam, which itself is a moniker for semen), which proves that the band members did not take the band seriously. They dressed like they were a glam metal band, acted like they were doing stand-up comedy, and wrote songs that screamed individuality. The band’s success was cut short with Wood’s heroin overdose, which left him brain-dead. Released on September 22, 1992, Mother Love Bone’s self-titled compilation album contains content from their extended play Shine (1989) and their only studio album, Apple (1990). Notable songs include “This Is Shangrila”, “Bone China”, “Come Bite the Apple”, “Heartshine”, “Man of Golden Words”, “Gentle Groove”, “Mindshaker Meltdown”, and “Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns”. The album does not contain all of the material from the two releases, most notably “Lady Godiva Blues” and an alternate recording of “Capricorn Sister” that contains the hidden track “Zanzibar”. This album was released after the death of vocalist Andrew Wood and the dissolution of the band as a whole. Mother Love Bone was a great influence to its many peers and to the growing Seattle music scene. Following the demise of Mother Love Bone, bassist Jeff Ament and rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard helped to form the bands Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam.
