ENGL – Well, those boots, there’s two to wear them : Geoffray Aznar on vocals and guitar, and Samuel Devauchelle on drums. Two who sound like four ! Because Dirty Bootz is the power of a fuzz guitar played loud combined with a rough, precise drumming, savagely connected to the pace of the assembly lines, the speed of the wheels biting the asphalt of an abandoned road, the mood of some wind that would shake the branches of a holm oak or an olive tree. If their music gathers from Skip James’s old blues or the electric screams of some Kurt Cobain that would have been raised under the sticky South of France sun, it mostly sounds like the thundering surly call of duty of a duet eager to fight. On stage, the two accomplices amorously mistreat their gear and take the audience to a hidden secret place they seem the only ones to know about. A place where dusk competes with sunshine and where westerns were soaked in the industrial flavours of an iron future. On record, Dirty Bootz chose to emphasize contrast while pushing to the limit a certain logic of pure efficiency. On Broken Toy – the title of their first album – you will hear dense, aggressive rock (Dead Clouds In Your Pockets, Burnt My Home, Bogeyman’s Grin, Washing-Machine), muggy blues ballads (Welcome To The Sun) and even some piece of jewelry as Never Say Goodbye, played on a banjo and recorded outdoors. You can even hear the crickets ! The world of Dirty Bootz goes far beyond the alternating low volume / heavy outburst pattern borrowed from the 1990’s grunge rock music. The expected deflagration keeps you waiting and when it finally blows up, you find out that your ears are wasted and that you never saw it coming. Sure there is screaming and fury but beyond that, Dirty Bootz deals with inner wounds and internal scars : the « broken toy » that gives its title to the album is no more than the musician exposing his fragility amidst general indifference. More optimistic, Welcome To The Sun invites the unborn child into a haven of peace and freedom. Not far away, Never Say Goodbye conveys the voice of a father comforting his son about a link that will never break up. Burnt My Home dives into fiction so as to remind us how chaos breeds chaos and Dead Clouds In Your Pockets recalls our true inner richness. Way aside the usual circuit of the small urban rock bands, far from the cities and their pointless hustle and bustle, Dirty Bootz sure makes a difference with its quiet radicalness and its attachment to a bunch of rock’n’roll traditions we all thought were gone : buckets of sweat, a honest smile and a goddamned soul.
