Lullabies Help The Brain Grow is the second album released by Big Boys, visionary Texas skate punks, in 1983. Big Boys got their start on the Austin punk scene in the late 1970s. The band was fronted by Randy “Biscuit” Turner with Tim Kerr on guitar, Chris Gates on bass, and a succession of drummers, the most well-known being Rey Washam (Scratch Acid). Unlike the rest of the hardcore scene at the time, they weren’t afraid to move away from super-fast tempos in favor of good old-fashioned white skate funk. Beyond funk influences, the band sometimes played an early post-punk sound reminiscent of their contemporaries, The Minutemen. Thanks to their participation in the first “skate comps” organized by Thrasher magazine, Big Boys were very popular among the new wave of 1980s skate punks.
